Professors Have the Highest Pay, Highest Wage Growth, New Study Reveals
Professors Have the Highest Pay, Highest Wage Growth, New Study RevealsProfessors Have the Highest Pay, Highest Wage Growth, New Study Reveals It pays to be a professor these daysIn the monthly Glassdoor Local Pay Reports , we examine pay growth trends for 60 different jobs across 10 major metros and the United States. We took our research one step to examine which jobs are both high growth (looking at year-over-year pay growth) and high paying (according to median base pay). And while software engineers and registered nurses were in the so calledSweet spot, professors beat out all the other occupations as having the highest growth and the highest salary.Thats right In April, professors saw a year-over-year pay increase of $4,934 (5.8% growth from brde year) and an average salary of $90,007. When it comes to having high growth and high pay, professors followed by customer service managers ($3,733, $54,177), attorneys ($3,426, $98,594) and programmer analysts ($3, 360, $69,233).Like many of todays employment trends, experts say professors are experiencing high growth and high pay because of increased demand. The source of high salaries and rapid growth of professor pay is rooted in competition, says Glassdoor chief economist Dr. Andrew Chamberlain. Universities must compete with major corporations for talent in the fields of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and all STEM fields. Therefore, in order to attract and retain talent, universities in many cases are making attractive counter offers, and thats likely driving the rapid rise were seeing in pay for professors nationwide.Sounds a lot like those college lessons on supply and demand, right?Overall, our research found that theres a slight negative relationship between pay and growth. Higher paying jobs on average are correlated with lower pay growth. And lower paying jobs are correlated with higher growth rates. For example, data scientist is among the highest-paying jobs in the U. S. today, with a median base pay of $94,944 per year. However, data scientist pay is only growing at 1.1 percent from a year ago, well below the national average of 2.7 percent. On the contrary, cashiers earn a median base pay of $27,582 per year, but are experiencing rapid pay growth of 5.0 percent year-over-year.But its important to note that not every job follows this pattern. Some jobs have both high pay and high wage growth, while others have both low pay and low growth. Interested in the data? 5 unconventional team-building activities that really work
5 unconventional team-building activities that really work5 unconventional team-building activities that really workIn order for a business to prosper and be more successful, the people working there should give their maximum and invest all their effort and creativity into building the company along with their boss. So, if you want your staff to be happy to work for you and with you, you should organize some team-building activities for them occasionally. However, if these activities arent interesting or stimulating enough, you might end up with a bunch of disgruntled people, blaming you for wasting their precious time. So, here are five activities your employees will actually like and which can make them function better as a team.Zombie EscapeThis activity requires good problem-solving skills, but also close collaboration of all the members of the team. The scenario is fun, interesting and maybe even a bit scary. The team is locked in a room with a zombie tied with a rope. The goal is to escape the room by solving different puzzles and problems, without being caught by the zombie. In the beginning, it might seem easy, since the rope holding the zombie in place is short. However, every five minutes the rope gets longer and the zombie gets closer to the living. By that time, the team members will be desperately trying to find the answers to all sorts of trick questions in a space that gets more limited as the zombies rope gains length. Solving riddles and putting heads together towards a common objective will help your employees build a strong team culture and provide them with the experience they can later use on your next company project.Laser TagThis is another activity which will force your team to solve problems together, but also make quick and vital decisions under a lot of pressure, all the while working on enhancing their communication skills and building mutual trust. What more could you want from a team? Plus, this is a recreational activity, since th eres a lot of moving around while trying to avoid being shot, or trying to eliminate a player from the opposing team. Physical activities such as this one can boost their self-esteem, but also improve their immune system and overall wellbeing. So, while theyre having a blast and going through an adrenaline rush, theyll also be gaining experience theyll later be able to use at work. And not only that. Theyll be happy and excited as children, which will enhance their mood, promote good health and help them focus next time they go back to work.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreVolunteeringEverybody feels better and more useful when they help someone and do something inspiring. And when its a team effort, theres a shared sense of achievement, which grows and multiplies as it moves from one partie to another. The key is to find something most of your employees are passionate about and work towards helping that organization or charity. For example, in companies where most employees are female, the team might find a foundation which give disadvantaged girls scholarships to improve their odds at getting good education. These kinds of foundations provide girls with study equipment, various resources and even tutoring, which is something everybody would be happy to contribute to. So, by engaging in activities with such great goals, not only will your employees be a part of something memorable and show good initiative, but theyll also exhibit social responsibility, which could be a great asset to you and your company.Tough MudderWhen it comes to team-building activities, this is probably one of the most challenging one, mentally and physically. This is something that requires people to train and prepare themselves for weeks or even months ahead, since the activity includes a whole range of difficult challenges, which you can only overcome if youre fit, of clear mind a nd dedicated. And even though it may appear that having grown people crawling through mud, dangling from ropes and jumping over pits isnt something that a business could have any use of, this is actually a great way for a team to bond and bring some new energy into the office. It teaches people not to give up, no matter the obstacles, as well as to turn to each other for untersttzung and advice when they get stuck. Once they realize thats the best way to go forward, theyll implement it at work and your company can benefit from it greatly.Museum HackThis is a new and innovative way to visit museums. Museum hack is an interactive and quite an adventurous way to go through different museums and to introduce people to art and history in a way theyll love and remember. The goal is not to overload people with information about everything there is to see in a museum, but rather to choose specific wings and works of art which will be presented through interesting stories and games, making t he tour more dynamic than anything you could have imagined. This is a great activity for your staff, since it will give them the opportunity to see something they havent before, to learn something new and intriguing, but in a stimulating and thought-provoking manner. What your employees can draw from the experience is that there is always a new and different way to approach each problem, project or job and that some fresh perspective can improve their efficiency, along with your business. The ideas are all there. Now just pick one and make your company work better by making your employees happy.Isabel William is consultant by day and a blogger by night and om to twins 24/7.

5 Ways to Improve Your Career in Your 20s - The Muse
5 Ways to Improve Your Career in Your 20s - The Muse5 Ways to Improve Your Career in Your 20sThe day has come. I have officially reached that point in my career at which I can reflect back and say, Ah, yes. Im so glad I did that when I was 25. It sure is paying off now. And on the flip side of this very coin, Im also at the Oh, man. Why did I not consider that 15 years ago? stage of life. While there is plenty that one does not need to have all figured out in the early career years, there are a few things that every 20-something professional should get a handle on sooner, not later. Why? Because they may very well lead to big-time dividends by the time you hit your 40s (trussst me.)1. Be Less Afraid to Approach MentorsMost early career professionals Ive worked with are somewhere between pensive and paralyzed when I suggest approaching a later-stage professional about mentorship. Stop that nonsense. Many seasoned (and successful) professionals welcome invitations to share their experti se. Most of the time, theyre flattered to be asked because they remember being in your shoes once upon a time. The best people to approach are those doing what you want to be doing in 10-15 years, and doing it well. You can learn so much from the people who have already trod down the path upon which youre embarking. Not to mention, they may be super helpful when it comes to opening doors.2. Establish Yourself as a Thought Leader, Early OnThink you couldnt possibly be viewed as any kind of authority on that thing you do professionally? Think again. As you build expertise, you will benefit (enormously) if you begin a regular habit of making people aware of your passion for and knowledge of your particular field. Thanks to social media, you have a bunch of relevant platforms (especially LinkedIn) through which you can post articles, pose questions, and share news about what youre doing. Or, consider launching your own personal blog.Staying top of mind is half the battle for all of us as professionals. Start early, and stay on peoples radar as one who knows your stuff and loves what you do. Why? Because people just might think of you first when great opportunities related to your area of expertise come their way.3. Make Sacrifices and Take Risks While You Have FreedomThis is one of those things people warned me about, and I didnt listen. And now, I wish I had. Often, when youre in your 20s, you have relatively few responsibilities and obligations. Yes, of course. You have rent (or a mortgage) and bills to pay, but many dont have spouses and children (and dogs, and aging parents, and lacrosse games, and track meets, and) to factor in when it comes to taking a big career gamble, or working endless hours, or making other lofty sacrifices. You also have tons of runway left front of you, so if you err in your risk-taking, theres plenty of time for a mulligan.Im not suggesting that you be reckless or ridiculous here. Be thoughtful, for sure. But these are absolutely grea t years to be a risk-taker with your career. It could really pay off by the time you reach your 40s.4. Take Advantage of Company-Paid TrainingThis one is huge. If you work for a company that pays for training or certifications, grab at this opportunity. I mean GRAB at it. Ongoing learning is vital for every professionals growth. So if someone is offering to foot the bill? For heavens sake- run with it. Not sure what training might be beneficial for you down the road? Do this Review a handful of job postings for roles one or two notches up the food chain from where youre at right now. Take a look at the required and preferred skills. If you see any skills, certifications, or credentials called for that you dont have? These are likely the very classes you should consider first.5. Stay in Touch With People Along the WayI cant tell you how many times people from my past jobs have looped around and become my mentors, confidants, clients, and allies over the years. Its literally dozens. I have recruiting clients today who hired me because we worked together 15 years ago. I just did the resume of a former co-workers son. I booked a substantial outplacement project through a former boss, who now works at a firm that was going through a reduction in force. Had you told me 15 years ago how valuable my colleagues from years past would be, I suspect I would not have believed you. Fortunately, I still stayed in reasonable touch with my peers and supervisors (thank you, LinkedIn), and today its paying off handsomely. It just may for you, too. When youre early on in your career, trying to figure out which seeds to plant (and when) can be confusing and overwhelming. For some, it may also feel so far out that these foundational moves couldnt possibly matter. But as both a long-time career strategist and a 40-something professional, Ill tell you straight up Deliberate, strategic moves today can (and very likely will) put you well ahead of the pack in the long run.And the view fr om the front? Its pretty much always nicer than the rear.

Air Force Ribbons and Medals
Air Force Ribbons and MedalsAir Force Ribbons and MedalsLike all branches of the U.S. military, the Air Force uses medals and ribbons to recognize airmen and women who have performed bravely both in combat and non-combat situations, as well as those wounded or killed in battle. Most of the Air Force medals have counterparts in the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. Here are some of the best-known medals awarded by the Air Force, listed in no particular order. Air ForceMedal of Honor The highest honor for heroism, the Air Force Medal of Honor is a gold five-pointed star, one point down, inside a wreath of green laurel. Each point is tipped with trefoils and includes within the background a crown of laurel and oak. An annulet of 34 stars, representing the head of the Statue of Liberty, is centered on the star. The star is suspended from a bar and bears the inscription VALOR above a rendering of the USAF coat of arms thunderbolt. Air Force Cross This is the Air Force version of the A rmys Distinguished tafelgeschirr Cross, and the Navy and Marine Corps Navy Cross. This is given for extraordinary heroism for an action against an enemy of the United States, or while serving in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force. Its awarded in situations where the actions dont quite justify the Medal of Honor. Distinguished Service Medal Awarded to general officers for exceptionally meritorious tafelgeschirr to the government, in combat or noncombat situations. Air Force Silver Star The Silver Star is awarded for acts of heroism or valor over a short period, such as a battle that lasts more than a day. Air Force pilots may receive the Silver Star after five or more combat situation confirmed kills (also known as an ace), in situations where he or she has risked their life numerous times. Bronze Star Given for heroic or meritorious achievement or service in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, not involving aerial flight. Purple Heart All branches of the American military have a medal for servicemen and women wounded or killed in action. The Purple Heart has a profile of George Washington, who created the award, originally called the Badge of Military Merit. It was renamed the Purple Heart since the color purple symbolizes bravery and courage. Defense Superior Service Medal Recognizes service in a position of great responsibility in a joint activity. This medal is usually awarded to senior officers such as generals and colonels (which makes sense given its description). Other Air Force medals and awards of note include Legion of Merit Designed to be given to the citizens of other nations as well as American military personnel.Distinguished Flying Cross Awarded for heroism or extraordinary achievement while in an aerial flight.Airmans Medal Given for heroic acts not involving actual combat.Defense Meritorious Service Medal Recognizes noncombat meritorious service in a joint assignment.Meritorious Servic e Medal For outstanding noncombat meritorious achievement or service.Air Medal For single acts of heroism or meritorious achievements in aerial flight. 7 things Happy Successful People Do Differently
7 things Happy Successful People Do Differently7 things Happy Successful People Do DifferentlyToday, Marc and Angel Czu sichnoff are professional life coaches and run a popular website, Marc and Angel Hack Life, about positive thinking, productivity, and finding happiness and success.Today, their book 1000+ Little Things Happy Successful People Do Differently will be published by Tarcher Perigree. Its chockful of, yes, over a thousand tips and tricks about how to deal with anger, frustration in addition to how to find joy, increase productivity, and generally become the best version of yourself. Its an update of a self-published book they did six or so years ago, with over a third new content, Marc Chernoff told Ladders. All of the tips and advice came from personal experience, he said. We started our blog 12 years ago, out of personal necessity. In their late 20s, they both experienced devastating loss within a few weeks of each other Angel lost her older brother to suicide, and one of their mutual best friends passed away. Then Angel, the breadwinner among them, lost her job, and they were thrown into financial insecurity.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWe had never dealt with grief or overcoming loss, or dealing with true struggle, said Marc. We hadnt really invested in personal development at all because things were going reasonably well. So we ended up starting the blog as an outlet, sort of a personal accountability journal for us. They saw therapists, they read up on self-help gurus, trying to figure out, What were the tools, tips basically, the affirmations it was going to take to get us through this, keep the right thoughts and ideas at the top of our minds so during those hardest moments we could figure out how to push through.Marc stressed that they wanted to cope in healthy ways, rather than through alcohol or binge-watching TV. All the ideas they came up with made it into the blog, which became a hit, and eventually, the book. Today, the Chernoffs have transitioned into life-coaching.The book isnt meant to be read straight through, but piecemeal.I think the its for you to be able to dive in and out of it as needed, Angel told Ladders. You can get whatever youre looking for if you have five, ten minutes to check in and let it give you that boost of inspiration.Below is an excerpt from 1000+ Little Things Happy Successful People Do Differently1. Become addicted to constant and never-ending self-improvement.Every day is a new day to learn, grow, develop your strengths, heal yourself from past regrets, and move forward. It is never too late to switch gears and change things that are not working in your life. Using today wisely will always help you create a more positive tomorrow.2. Figure out what you really want.Youll be running on a hamster wheel forever if you never decide where you want to go. Some of us were born to be musicians, or poets, or entrepreneurs. Dont just quit because you didnt get it right on your first shot. And dont waste your life fulfilling someone elses dreams and desires. Follow your intuition and make a decision to never give up on who you are capable of becoming.3. Find gratitude around difficult people. We expect people to treat us kindly, fairly, and respectfully. But the reality is some people wont. They will lose their tempers or act foolishly, regardless of how we treat them. This must be accepted.Dont lower your standards, but do remind yourself that removing your expectations of others especially those who are being difficult is the best way to avoid being disappointed by them. When youre forced to deal with a difficult person, you can be grateful for having other people in your life who are far less difficult. You can be grateful for having a way to practice being better at patience, communication, and tempering your expectations. You can think of this person as a tea cher who is inadvertently helping you to grow stronger as a person. And, at the very least, you can be grateful for them because they serve as a great reminder of how not to be.4. One of the hardest decisions you will ever face in life is choosing to walk away.If you catch yourself in a cycle of trying to change someone, or defending yourself against someone who is trying to change you, walk away. But if you are pursuing a dream, take another step. And dont forget that sometimes this step will involve modifying your dream or planning a new one its OK to change your mind or have more than one dream.5. Break down goals into realistic, high-impact tasksTake your primary goal and divide it into smaller and smaller chunks until you have a list of realistic tasks, each of which can be accomplished in a few hours or less. Then work on the next unfinished, available task that will have the greatest impact at the current time. And each of these smaller goals is supported by even more granul ar sub-goals and daily tasks. It is these small daily tasks that, over time, drive larger achievement.6. Create and observe a to-dont listA to-dont list is a list of things not to do. It might seem amusing, but its an incredibly useful tool for keeping track of unproductive habits, like checking Facebook and Twitter, randomly browsing news websites, and so on. Create one and post it in your workspace where you can see it.7. Start noticing and living in the presentRight now is a miracle. Right now is the only moment guaranteed to you. Right now is life. So stop thinking about how great things will be in the future. Stop dwelling on what did or didnt happen in the past. Learn to be in the here and now and experience life as its happening. 3 Ways to Hire Top Talent -- With or Without Open RolesAt any moment, you could come across the perfect potential employee. Whether at a networking event, in the airport, or even at a family picnic, you cant let top talent slip through your fingers. Unfortunately, these unexpected meetings often happen when there are no open fitting roles. But waiting until a position is open to bring that person into your talent pool is extremely dangerous. When a position finally does open, they could have already moved on, leaving you with another expensive and time-consuming candidate search. With the cost per day of an open position averaging approximately $500, according to the CEB Global Talent Trends Q2 2016 report, and the average time to fill at about 44 days, unfilled roles can run upwards of $22,000. So, when the perfect talent crosses your path, you need to hold onto them tightly open position or not. To help you convince company leaders this is the best idea, we went to the experts. Her es what they said1. Start with organizational realitiesWhen you find someone who has skills, talents or the right character, do everything you can to bring them into the organization. It puts you ahead of the competition if you build a bench of top talent that can step up to fill future openings. And youll save time and money, too.Turnover is inevitable, so talk about your current turnover statistics. In addition, there may be some people known as high-risk for quitting or others who are clearly under-performers who may be replaced in the short-term. By hiring before a position is empty, there will be someone already trained and familiar with the organization who can step in immediately. This saves time and money in two ways the cost of the recruiting process itself and the lost productivity while a new hire gets up to speed. With the changing generational demographics, succession planning is essential for every position. Consider who in the organization is moving toward retirement a nd how that will impact current staffing. What gaps will need filled? Show how this hire can contribute to resolving those issues. Clearly define the skills, talents, and attributes this candidate brings. Show how they can add value for both short- and long-term success. First, show the results when key people are there and working at their full potential. Then, project a scenario when one of those key players suddenly leaves.
